RENEW Energy Supports Local Organizations with Donations of $24K

RENEW partnered with the South Dakota Wind Energy Association to host an industry event promoting workforce development, wind development, and ending hunger in South Dakota.

August 23, 2018 – RENEW Energy (RENEW), a leader in wind energy, joined forces with the South Dakota Wind Energy Association (SDWEA) to host their first charitable event, the SDWEA Golf & Shoot hosted by RENEW. Through sponsorships from key customers and vendors, this event helped raise $24,000 for local organizations.

Benefiting organizations include: Mitchell Technical Institute (MTI), Lake Area Technical Institute (LATI), SDWEA and Feeding South Dakota.

“We are extremely thankful for our sponsors in helping make this event successful,” said Jim Mikel, RENEW President and CEO. “It was wonderful seeing the industry come together in Sioux Falls to network, have some fun, and promote workforce development and community involvement.”

Brian Roberts, Wind Turbine Technology Instructor at MTI stated, “The Golf and Shoot was a great event. All the people were welcoming, and it was great to catch up with old friends. As an instructor, I am very grateful for the generous support of RENEW for the Wind Turbine Technology program at MTI and I look forward to working together in the future.”

The event, which brought in nearly two-hundred attendees from across the nation, consisted of a golf tournament at Prairie Green Golf Course and a sporting clay tournament at Hunters Pointe Shooting Complex. The awards social and dinner took place at CJ Callaway’s Event Center.

The proceeds will go directly to the wind and renewable energy programs at MTI and LATI to enhance training and secure a future skilled workforce. Feeding South Dakota is committed to delivering nutritious foods to meet the needs of hungry people. SDWEA will use their monies to help grow wind energy in this great state.

“This event was a great way for the people supporting wind energy to get together and share their collective enthusiasm for the possibilities for wind energy in South Dakota,” said Jennifer Stalley, SDWEA Executive Director. “It is wonderful to see so many people working to make those opportunities realities.”

RENEW looks forward to growing this event next year and making it an even bigger success.

RENEW Energy, Inc. Receives the 2017 SD Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve Pro Patria Award

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota National Guard hosted its 2017 Dining-Out at the Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center in Pierre, Feb. 1.

The annual event brings together Guardsmen from across the state for a formal evening to honor the organization’s history and to recognize individual and unit achievements from the past year.

The atmosphere, while formal, includes deep-rooted traditions which lighten the mood and provide both members and guests not only plenty of laughs, but a chance to learn some of the organization’s history, traditions and an opportunity to recognize individual and unit achievements.

A video highlighting the many accomplishments made by the men and women of the SDNG in 2017 was shown in addition to comments from Gov. Dennis Daugaard and Maj. Gen. Tim Reisch, the SDNG adjutant general. The National Guard also recognized a family, an employer and a public servant with awards recognizing their contributions to the SDNG mission.

PRO PATRIA AWARD – RENEW ENERGY, INC.
The awards portion of the evening began by presenting RENEW Energy, Inc. with the South Dakota Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Pro Patria Award.

The Pro Patria Award is presented annually to one South Dakota employer who provides exceptional support of our national defense through leadership practices and personnel policies that support employees serving in the National Guard or Reserve.

Pictured left to right is: Maj. Gen. Tim Reisch, SDNG adjutant general; Gov. Dennis Daugaard; Jim Mikel, president of RENEW Energy; Jim White, ESGR-SD chair; Staff Sgt. Daniel Noeldner and Sgt. JD Hanson, employees of RENEW and members of the South Dakota National Guard. (U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff Sgt. Heather Trobee)

Staff Sgt. Daniel Noldner, a lead field technician with RENEW Energy and a member of the South Dakota Army National Guard’s Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion, 147th Field Artillery, nominated his employer for the award.

“RENEW Energy realizes the importance of a strong force and provides remarkable support and opportunities to members of the U.S. Armed Forces,” said Maj. Lona Christensen, executive director for the SD ESGR committee.

Sioux Falls-based RENEW Energy actively recruits National Guard and Reserve members as evidenced by their employee’s referral bonus for military hires.

“Their management team provides the most flexibility possible when planning schedules around an employee’s military service,” Christensen said. “RENEW Energy’s technicians travel to worksites throughout the nation performing work on wind turbines. It doesn’t matter where their technician is working at the week of an upcoming drill weekend, RENEW will either pay for the technician’s plane tickets or all the fuel to get home for drill and then back to the work site.”

RENEW’s support is extended to the families of service members as well.

“One employee married a service member just prior to his deployment,” Christensen said, during the award’s presentation. “RENEW energy employees rallied around her and ensured that she was supported during her husband’s deployment. This employee, the military spouse, hadn’t been with RENEW very long and didn’t have much vacation built up but she was still afforded time off without question to attend military events. She was also provided time off when her spouse returned.”

RENEW Energy’s commitment to an employee’s military service comes from the top down.

“One employee shared a conversation he had with the president of RENEW,” Christensen said, sharing another example with the audience. “During this conversation, the employee mentioned he wanted to get out of the National Guard so his service wouldn’t burden the company.

The employee was told by the president that the company would do whatever they needed to do in order to support his dual careers, saying, “Do not make the company the reason you get out of the Guard. We are here to support your Guard career, not make you quit.”

“A second employee cited a similar conversation with the president,” said Christensen. “This experience led him to say, he felt the support then and now from RENEW Energy and as a result of the company’s support of his military service, he will achieve a military retirement.

“Employers are inextricably linked to the nation’s defense by sharing their most precious assets, their employees,” Christensen said. “RENEW Energy, Inc. is deserving of this recognition for their outstanding contributions to our military services. Their leadership exemplifies the patriotic spirit that is alive and well here in our great State of South Dakota.”

South Dakota Business Leaders Join National Organization to Tout Clean Energy Jobs in Rural America

Sioux Falls Business Leaders Jim Mikel and Paul Batcheller to Advocate for Clean Energy Jobs

Two Sioux Falls, SD CEO’s – Jim Mikel of RENEW Energy and Paul Batcheller of PrairieGold Solar – have joined the Advisory Board of New Energy America, an organization created to promote clean energy jobs in rural America. The group, launched in September with support from rural clean energy entrepreneurs, farmers, and former leaders in Congress, released the first Clean Energy Jobs in Rural America Report, which contains a detailed analysis of clean energy jobs in each of the 50 states. The report shows that clean energy jobs outpace fossil energy jobs in 41 states.

“Jim and Paul will be great additions to our advisory board,” said Mike Carr, Executive Director of NEA. “Over the last few decades, they’ve seen first-hand the sustained job growth that the new energy economy is bringing to rural states like South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska.”

New Energy America will engage lawmakers representing rural communities to demonstrate how policies that support the deployment of clean energy create jobs for their constituents. While many politicians in these states have traditionally supported fossil fuels, the data is clear that policies that support reducing emissions are creating good jobs in rural America.

Jim Mikel is the President of RENEW Energy, the largest Independent Service Provider in the US Wind Industry with 12 service divisions and over 230 employees. RENEW has a strong customer base in North America which they service from eight locations across the country, including their headquarters and remanufacturing facility in Sioux Falls, SD. Jim joins New Energy America with over 21 years of wind industry experience.

Paul Batcheller, CEO of PrairieGold Solar, also resides in Sioux Falls. PraireGold Solar invests in and builds distributed-scale solar projects throughout the United States. In addition, Paul serves as a Partner at PrairieGold Venture Partners, a Sioux Falls, SD-based venture capital firm he co-founded in 2004. He has served as a director on the board of a variety of clean energy companies throughout the United States.

In addition to Jim Mikel and Paul Batcehller, the advisory board also includes; Roger Johnson the President of the National Farmers Union; Jon Powers the Co-Founder of Clean Capital; and Former Congressman George Miller.

RENEW Energy, Inc. Honored by Department of Defense for Extraordinary Support of the South Dakota Guard and Reserve

South Dakota Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DoD) office, announced today that RENEW Energy, Inc. (RENEW) was honored with an Above and Beyond Award in recognition of extraordinary support of its employees who serve in the South Dakota Guard and Reserve.

The ESGR Above and Beyond Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize American employers providing extraordinary patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve. Supportive employers are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and Reserve units.

RENEW joins thousands of American employers who have reviewed and amended their current human resources policies to ensure compliance with the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). Many employers provide support far beyond what USERRA requires to include pay differential to offset the loss of wages, and extension of health care benefits which complement coverage provided by the military when their employees are mobilized.

RENEW was nominated by Staff Sgt. Daniel Noeldner and Sgt. JD Hanson with the South Dakota Army National Guard. Several policies that RENEW goes Above and Beyond include covering all travel expenses for guard drill, and continuation of benefits when serving; going beyond business practices to accommodate schedules, training, and events; and hiring preferences for active military and veterans. Noeldner and Hanson also indicated that RENEW provides assistance and resources to members of the military during their service. They keep in excellent communication and focus on the needs of service members and their families.

ESGR seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR’s mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.

For more information about ESGR outreach programs, or ESGR volunteer opportunities, please call Maj. Lona Christensen at 605-737-6540 or visit www.ESGR.mil.
